80% of participants feel their face-to-face courses will benefit as a result of participating in this program

91% of the participants felt that they achieved the skills necessary to teach with simulations.

Over 80% feel their online course will achieve the same learning outcomes as their face-to-face course.

A vast majority feel that they acquired the skills to build a scenario-simulation (88.9%).

The Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI) offers 3-4 institutes each year in coordination with Information Technology Services (ITS).  These one-week, intensive workshops routinely receive rave reviews (see sidebar). Because of the popularity of the institutes, participants are chosen through an application process roughly 2 months prior to the institute.

Program for Online & Hybrid Course Design

ยท         2 Sessions: September 21-December 18 & January 25-May 7

Whether you have never taught online or want to improve a course you have already developed, you will benefit from participation in this program.  Everyone will complete a 4 week online minicourse in either online or hybrid course design.  We will meet 4-5 times as a group during the semester and there are 3 required individual consultations with an instructional designer.

Moodle: January 4-8
Moodle is an alternative to Blackboard/WebCT for managing course content, discussions and online learning.   While it provides the same basic tool set as Blackboard, many students and faculty find it easier to use and believe that Moodle accentuates a participatory style of learning.  During this intensive week of exploration, you will not only learn Moodle inside and out, but you will also learn best practices in using online tools and designing online activities.

TBA: March 15-19
The topic of the Spring Break Institute will be announced shortly.

NextGen Course Design: May 24-28
Turn your course into a Ne(x)tGen Course!  We will explore the phenomenon of netgen /millennial learners and the types of learning environments that maximize learner engagement.  You decide which components to add to your course from among: group learning, active learning techniques, classroom assessment techniques, web 2.0/technology integration and alignment of learning activities for rapid instructional feedback.

Laptop Basics Institute: June 7-11

Entering is seventh year, Laptop Basics offers an overview of laptop hardware and software.  Faculty get an opportunity to learn tips and tricks for keeping the computer up to date, file management, data back-up, safe web browsing, efficient use of MS Office, e-mail secrets, etc.  We also take time to discuss best practices and policies for laptop use in and out of class.

Applications for all programs will be distributed 2 months prior to the start of the programs via e-mail to the SSC-Community listserv.
